The wheel decides for us

We were all just sitting there, waiting. The workshop was supposed to start ten minutes ago, but we were stuck on who would present the first case study. You could feel the polite hesitation in the room, everyone looking at their notes a little too intently.

The quiet before the spin

Our facilitator, Sarah, just smiled and pulled up the wheel on the screen. It was a simple list of our names. I think we all felt a collective, unspoken sigh. No one had to volunteer or feel put on the spot.The tension wasn't about the task itself. It was that subtle social pressure of deciding who goes first. The wheel took that weight off the table completely. It felt like a neutral third party had just walked into the room.

Letting go of the decision

When Sarah clicked 'spin', we all watched it go. For a few seconds, it was just a blur of colors. My own name flashed by a couple of times. There was a weird kind of relief in not knowing, in having the outcome be entirely out of our hands.It landed on Priya. She laughed and gave a little shrug. 'Alright then,' she said, and got up to connect her laptop. Just like that, the logjam was broken. The decision was made, and it felt transparent. No arguments, no subtle lobbying.

The immediate shift

The energy in the room changed instantly. We stopped being a group of individuals waiting for direction and became a team ready to work. The focus snapped to Priya's screen, to the content, instead of lingering on the process.

A simple kind of fairness

It’s a small thing, really. But in that moment, the fairness of it was everything. It wasn't about who was most prepared or least busy. It was just chance, and we could all accept that.
