The quiet before a name

Revision sessions can get tense. Everyone wants to be ready, but no one wants to be first.You can feel the quiet focus in the room. It's a heavy kind of quiet, waiting to be broken.

The weight of choosing

I used to just pick a name. It felt quick, but it wasn't always fair.You could see the relief on some faces. Others would just look down at their desk.It made the whole process feel like a judgment, not a chance to learn.

A different kind of quiet

So I started using a random picker. I'd load all the names in before class even started.The click of the button is the only sound. Then there's that brief pause, waiting quietly for a name to be called.It's a neutral sound. It doesn't belong to me or any one student.

The shift in the room

Something changed in the atmosphere. The tension didn't vanish, but it softened.It became about the topic, not the person. The randomness took the pressure off of me, too.

Eyes on the screen

Now, when I press the button, all eyes go to the screen.There's a collective breath held, then released. It's just a name, chosen by chance.

The student whose name appears usually gives a small nod. Sometimes there's a quiet groan, but it's never directed at me.They know it was the wheel. They know it could have been anyone.That's the whole point. It keeps the interaction calm and lets everyone just focus on the work.
