The question at the end of class

The bell is about to ring, and I can feel the energy in the room shift. I glance at my notes, the ones I scribbled during the lesson, and wonder what everyone is taking away from today.

Looking for the quiet ones

My eyes always drift to the students who haven't said much. It's not about catching them out. I just want to know if they're following along, or if they're lost in a different thought entirely.Sometimes the most insightful answers come from the quietest corners. I try to make the space feel safe enough for that to happen.

What we're really asking

It's never about a right or wrong answer for me. The point is to see the connections they're making, or the one piece that's still a little fuzzy. That's the real information.I'm not scoring them. I'm just listening to the echoes of the lesson, seeing how it landed in different minds. It helps me know where to start tomorrow.

A quick check on the room

Sometimes I'll ask about a feeling instead of a fact. 'What part felt most confusing?' or 'What's one thing you're still thinking about?' It tells me more than a quiz ever could.
