Letting the wheel decide for us

We were all just standing there, looking at each other. Someone had to pick a restaurant, and no one wanted to be the one to do it. I remember the silence, the quiet shuffle of feet, everyone waiting for someone else to speak first.

The weight of being the decider

It’s funny how a simple choice can feel so heavy sometimes. You start thinking about everyone’s preferences, the last place we went, who might be disappointed. My mind was already racing through a dozen options, trying to find the perfect one that wouldn’t upset anyone. But there isn’t a perfect one. There’s just a choice, and the act of making it. I realized I was more worried about the fairness of the process than about where we actually ended up eating.

Handing it over to chance

So I just pulled out my phone and found one of those spinner apps. I typed in a few places we’d all mentioned at some point, places that were all fine. No one objected. There was a kind of collective relief in the air, like we’d all been let off the hook.I tapped the screen and we watched the virtual wheel spin. It was almost silly, but it did the job. The tension just evaporated. We weren’t choosing against each other anymore; we were just waiting to see what happened.

What the wheel held

It was a list of perfectly okay options. Nothing spectacular, nothing terrible. Just normal places we could go.

After the spin

When it landed, there was a little shrug, a couple of nods. No debate, no second-guessing. We just started walking toward the car.
