Leaning in to see who does the dishes
We were all just standing there, waiting. The dinner plates were stacked, and the only sound was the hum of the fridge. I remember thinking how nice it was to not have to decide.
The quiet before the spin
My sister held her phone with the wheel on the screen. We all leaned in a little, like we were watching a slow-motion replay. It felt silly, but in a good way. There was no arguing about fairness or whose turn it was. The wheel would just decide for us. It was a relief, honestly, to let something else take the lead for a minute.
When the name appears
I leaned closer, squinting a bit at the bright screen. The colors blurred as it spun, then slowed. For a second, it hovered between two names. Then it settled. We all saw it at the same time. There was a little collective sigh, not of disappointment, but of release. The question was answered. The person it landed on just nodded, a small smile. They started gathering the plates without a word. The rest of us drifted into the living room, the tension of the chore completely gone.
A small pocket of peace
It’s funny how such a tiny thing can carve out a bit of calm. The decision was made, and we could all just be in the room together again.
