A quiet moment before the standup
It was one of those mornings where the video call felt a bit too quiet. Everyone was there, but we were all just sort of looking at each other, waiting for someone else to break the silence. I could see the usual pattern starting—the same two people would jump in first, and then we'd have that awkward scramble to figure out who was next.
The weight of the first word
That hesitation at the beginning of a meeting has a real cost. It’s not just a few seconds of dead air. It sets a tone, and sometimes it feels like the energy just drains out before we even start. You can almost see people mentally calculating if it’s their turn, wondering if they should speak up. It puts this tiny, unnecessary burden on everyone, right when we’re supposed to be aligning and getting on with the day.
Letting the wheel decide
So, I made a simple digital wheel with everyone’s name on it. The idea wasn’t to add more process. It was to remove a tiny point of friction, a small decision we had to make every single day. Now, at the start of the standup, I just share my screen and give it a spin. There’s a little moment of anticipation, almost like a game show, and then a name lands. That person goes first.
What it changed
It sounds trivial, but it completely dissolved that initial awkwardness. No one has to volunteer or feel put on the spot. The order is random, fair, and utterly impartial.
The subtle shift
The conversation feels more balanced now. Different people lead off on different days, which brings different perspectives to the front of the discussion. It’s a small mechanic that quietly supports a healthier dynamic. It’s one less thing for me to manage, and one less silent negotiation for the team to have. We just start.
