The Wheel Spun and We All Laughed

It was one of those company events where you’re mostly just standing around, trying to look like you’re having a good time. Someone had set up a big screen with a digital wheel, and a few of us were just sort of hovering near it, not really sure what was about to happen.

The First Spin

I was nudged forward to give it a go. I clicked the button on the tablet, and the wheel started whirring with these bright, silly-looking segments. It landed on something called ‘Air Guitar Solo.’For a second, I just stared at it. Then someone in the back let out a snort, and that was it. The whole little crowd around the screen just cracked up. I did my best impression of a rock star, which was terrible, and the laughter just got louder.

What Was on the Wheel

It wasn’t about winning or being good. The challenges were all just excuses to be a bit silly in front of people you usually only talk to about deadlines. Things like trying to balance a pen on your nose, or telling a story where every sentence has to start with the letter ‘B’.You’d see a manager trying to do a silly walk, or the quiet person from accounting suddenly doing a dramatic movie trailer voice. Each spin pulled someone new into the center of this tiny, shared joke.

The Moment It Clicked

I realized I’d stopped checking my phone. We were all just watching, waiting to see what ridiculous thing would come next for whoever was brave enough to spin.

After the Laughter

When the event wrapped up, the conversations felt different. We weren’t just co-workers who’d been in the same room. We were the people who saw Karen attempt to rap about quarterly reports.Walking back to my desk, the usual office silence felt a little less heavy. We’d shared that dumb, genuine laughter, and for a little while, it just made the place feel more like a group of people and less like just an office.
