It’s that minute before the professor starts talking, when the room is still settling. You’re just looking at your notebook, trying to seem prepared. But really, you’re just waiting.

Everyone has their own little ritual for this part. Some people are checking their phones, others are shuffling papers. I usually just trace the edge of my pen cap, over and over.It’s not about being nervous, exactly. It’s more like a low hum of anticipation. You know the names are coming, and you’ll have to find your people in the room.

When the groups land

Hearing your name called out feels different every time. Sometimes it’s a relief, especially if you recognize a friendly face in the cluster. Other times, it’s just a blank slate of new people.That first moment of eye contact, or the small nod from across the table, it sets the tone. It’s a silent agreement to figure this out together, even if no one says it out loud.

A space to listen

I’ve found the best groups start with someone just asking a simple question about the reading. It doesn’t have to be profound.

The relief of a shared confusion

There’s something so grounding about hearing someone else whisper, “Wait, I didn’t get that part either.” It dissolves the pressure instantly.
