About This Spin Wheel

My pen was tapping a nervous rhythm on the edge of my notebook. The professor’s voice was a low hum, and I was trying to make myself smaller, hoping my name wouldn’t be the next one called. It’s that specific kind of quiet, where you can hear your own heartbeat too clearly.

When the silence feels too loud

I’d read the chapter three times, but the concepts still felt slippery. I knew the facts, but I didn’t *get* it, not in a way that would hold up if someone asked me to explain it out loud. My notes were a mess of underlined phrases and question marks in the margins. It wasn’t about getting a perfect score. I just wanted the tightness in my chest to ease, the feeling that I was one wrong answer away from being completely lost. Understanding felt like a solid floor, and right then, I was standing on very thin ice.

The relief of a shared confusion

Later, in the library, I mentioned my confusion to the person next to me. Their eyes lit up with a kind of relieved recognition. "I’m stuck on that exact part," they said, and just like that, the problem wasn’t just mine anymore. We started talking it through, haltingly at first. They asked a question I hadn’t considered, and in trying to find the words to answer, the idea suddenly clicked into place for me. It was the back-and-forth that did it, the act of explaining and listening. The goal shifted completely. It stopped being about memorizing the right term and started being about building the idea together, piece by piece, until it made sense to both of us.

What we ended up with

We made a list, just simple things we needed to figure out. No jargon, just the gaps we felt.
