A quiet evening with the family game wheel

The house is finally quiet. Dinner's been cleared away, and the usual evening scramble has settled into a soft hum. It's one of those nights where no one has the energy for anything big, but the idea of just staring at separate screens feels a bit hollow.

When no one can decide what to do

Someone suggested a game, but then came the inevitable back-and-forth. Too long, too complicated, too competitive. We were about to give up and retreat to our corners. Then I remembered the wheel I'd made a while back, just a list of silly, simple things we could do together.I pulled it up on my phone. There was no fanfare, no real plan. It was just there, a way to skip the debate. My youngest gave it a spin with a skeptical look, but there was a little smile there, too.

The spin that broke the quiet

The pointer landed on something utterly ridiculous. I can't even remember what it was now—something about making up a story one word at a time. We all groaned, but it was a good-natured groan. We started, and it was predictably terrible. The story made no sense, jumping from aliens to grocery shopping. But that was the point, I think. The lack of sense is what made us laugh. It wasn't a big, planned family fun night. It was just ten minutes of shared silliness that appeared out of nowhere. The living room felt different afterwards, warmer somehow, even though we all went back to our books and phones.
