A quiet evening and a spinning wheel

It was one of those slow evenings where everyone was just sort of drifting through the house. Dinner was done, the dishes were put away, and the usual pull of screens was starting to feel a bit heavy. I was just about to suggest we all find our own corners when I saw it on the shelf.

The box on the shelf

It was a small wooden box my partner had brought home a while ago. We’d never really used it. I picked it up, more out of idle curiosity than anything else, and opened the lid. Inside was a simple cardboard wheel, divided into colored wedges.I carried it to the kitchen table and gave it a spin. The soft *whirr-whirr-whirr* of the cardboard was a surprisingly pleasant sound. It landed on a wedge labeled ‘Charades.’ I just smiled a little to myself. It was such a small, silly thing.

An unplanned half-hour

I didn’t call anyone over. I just left it there, spinning it idly every few minutes. My daughter wandered in for a glass of water and paused to watch. ‘What’s that?’ she asked. I told her it was just a game wheel I’d found. She sat down and gave it a spin. It landed on ‘Two Truths and a Lie.’ She thought for a second, then told me one about her day at school. It wasn’t about winning or playing a full game. It was just a reason to sit and talk for a few minutes, with the wheel as a quiet prompt. My partner joined us a little later, drawn by the quiet conversation. He spun it next, landing on ‘Quick Draw.’ He grabbed a napkin and a pen, and we spent five minutes trying to guess his terrible doodle. We were all smiling, but it was a soft, tired kind of smile. The kind that comes from not having to try.

What the wheel held

It wasn't a list of grand adventures. Just little pockets of shared attention.

Leaving it out

We didn't put it away. It's still on the table, a quiet invitation for another slow evening.
